Shamar Joseph's Debut Five-For Ignites Windies' Hopes In Test Series

On his home debut for West Indies, Shamar Joseph clinched a five-for against South Africa, sparking hopes for victory in the closely contested Test series.

Shamar Joseph expressed immense joy after securing a five-wicket haul on his home debut for the West Indies. This achievement came during a dramatic first day of their second Test against South Africa, where 17 wickets fell. Joseph's impressive figures of 5-33 helped dismiss South Africa for just 160 runs in Guyana on Thursday.

Despite Joseph's heroics, South Africa ended the day in a stronger position. Wiaan Mulder responded with an excellent performance, taking 4-18 to reduce the West Indies to 97-7 by stumps. Mulder mentioned he closely observed Joseph's bowling and aimed to replicate it, which paid off as he removed key batsmen Kraigg Brathwaite, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, and Joshua Da Silva.

Joseph's Five-For Boosts Windies

"I didn't bowl at my best but I had a lot going for me today," Mulder said. "I just tried to replicate what Shamar did earlier in the day by bowling a length which made it difficult for the batters to score. He's obviously quicker than I am but the pitch also helped my style of bowling so I was able to capitalise."

Joseph was thrilled with his performance at home, stating it was an incredible feeling to achieve this milestone in front of his home crowd. "It's a great feeling to have done this at home," Joseph said about his five-wicket haul. "I haven't really played much here at Providence but I always go in with a clear plan to do what the team needed, and I am glad I was able to deliver today."

The support from the local fans added to his joy. "There's no place like home and playing in front of your home crowd is just the best feeling that could ever happen to anyone playing international cricket," he added. "Coming back home, the support was great and I'm glad I was able to go out and do my best."

Determination to Win

Despite ending the day on the back foot, Joseph remains optimistic about their chances in this Test match and series. He believes that the West Indies can recover and secure a victory. "We want to win this Test match so badly and I know we will win it," he confidently stated.

The two-match series remains evenly balanced following a draw in Trinidad and Tobago last week. The outcome of this Test will determine the series winner.

The first day's events set up an intriguing contest between both teams as they look forward to continuing their battle on subsequent days.
