In a major announcement ahead of the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have confirmed the appointment of Australian great Shane Watson as their Assistant Coach. The move marks another high-profile addition to KKR's backroom staff as they aim to build on their strong performances in recent years.

A legend of the modern game, Watson brings a wealth of knowledge, leadership, and tactical acumen to the two-time IPL champions. Over a glittering international career, the former all-rounder represented Australia in 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20 Internationals, scoring more than 10,000 runs and taking over 280 wickets across formats.

He was a vital member of Australia's World Cup-winning squads in 2007 and 2015, often delivering match-winning performances on the biggest stages.

Watson's connection with the IPL runs deep. Between 2008 and 2020, he featured in 145 matches, scored four centuries, and earned a reputation as one of the most impactful overseas players in the tournament's history. His stint with Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings made him a fan favourite across India.

Since retiring from professional cricket, Watson has seamlessly moved into coaching and mentoring roles in various T20 leagues around the world, earning praise for his cricketing insight and player development approach.

Welcoming him to the franchise, KKR CEO Venky Mysore said:

"We are thrilled to welcome Shane Watson to the KKR family. His experience as a player and coach at the highest level will add immense value to our team culture and preparation. His understanding of the T20 format is world-class, and we look forward to his contributions both on and off the field."

Sharing his enthusiasm about joining KKR, Watson said:

"It's a great honour to be part of a franchise as iconic as Kolkata Knight Riders. I've always admired the passion of KKR fans and the team's commitment to excellence. I'm eager to work closely with the coaching group and players to help bring another title to Kolkata."

With Watson's inclusion, KKR aim to reinforce their coaching setup and enhance their pursuit of a third IPL crown.
