Shashank Manohar quits as BCCI president and ICC chairman

Mumbai, May 10: Shashank Manohar today (May 10) resigned as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and also as chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Manohar's promises

On Tuesday afternoon, the 58-year-old Manohar stepped down from his position. He was the chairman of ICC, after replacing N Srinivasan in November 2015. But he has now quit that post too. His term in ICC was to end in June 2016. He won't be BCCI representative at Asian Cricket Council (ACC) too.

According to ICC, from now on, the chairman will be an independent one and chosen via a secret ballot. As per new rules, ICC chairman will not be allowed to hold any position with national boards. Manohar is set to become ICC's first-ever independent chairman.

The Indian cricket board said, "The BCCI confirms that Mr. Shashank Manohar has resigned from the post of President, BCCI. He has also resigned as the BCCI representative on the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council.

"The BCCI places on record its deep appreciation of the immense contribution to Indian cricket made by Mr. Manohar."

According to Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency, quoting a letter addressed to Indian cricket board secretary Anurag Thakur, Manohar said, "I hereby tender my resignation with immediate effect from the post of President of Board of Control for Cricket in India. I also resign with immediate effect as the representative of BCCI on the International Cricket Council, as also the Asian Cricket Council on which I was nominated by the General Body of BCCI.

"I thank all my colleagues and the staff for their support and cooperation during my tenure. I wish all of you all the very best in taking the cause of Cricket to greater heights."

"PTI", quoting sources, said, Thakur was set to take over as the next boss of BCCI. According to the Board's constitution, a Special General Meeting needs to be convened, within the next 15 days, to . Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Rajeev Shukla is also in the running for the top post.

In October 2015, Manohar was elected as the BCCI president unopposed at a Special General Meeting following the sudden demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya.

Last month, ICC said, "The election of the ICC Chairman by the Board will be held through a secret ballot in late May after all constitutional amendments have been approved by the Full Council in the coming weeks.

"The election process will be overseen by the ICC's independent Audit Committee Chairman and all present and past ICC directors will be eligible to contest the election. However, candidates can only be nominated by a fellow ICC director who, in turn, will be allowed to provide no more than one nominee. Any nominee with the support of at least two Full Member ICC directors will be put forward as a candidate for election.

"The elected independent Chairman will not be allowed to hold any national or provincial position with any Member Board."
