Shaun Marsh Retires From All Forms Of Cricket

Australia and former Punjab Kings opening batter Shaun Marsh has announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket, drawing the curtains on a decorated career that began in 2001.

After an unbeaten 64 in Melbourne Renegades' victory over Melbourne Stars in Saturday's Big Bash League Melbourne Derby, Marsh revealed he informed his teammates this weekend that the Renegades' last match in BBL season 13 against Sydney Thunder would be his last.

The 40-year-old, who was the youngest player in almost 50 years to represent WA at Sheffield Shield level when he debuted aged 17 years and 236 days in the 2000-01 summer, had announced his retirement from first class cricket in March 2023.

Ten months on since that announcement, the southpaw has called time on his professional career, having played in 38 Tests, 73 ODIs and 15 T20Is for the senior Australian men's team.

Marsh, who finishes his career playing for the Melbourne Renegades, will be remember as the first-eve Orang Cap winner in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during his stint with the Kings XI Punjab (now known as Punjab Kings) in 2008.

"I have loved playing for the Renegades, I've met some great people over the last five years and the friendships I've made will last a lifetime," Marsh was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

"This playing group is special. They've been amazing to me, amazing teammates and even better friends. Our members and fans are some of the most passionate out there and I'm so thankful for their support over the journey.

"Stick with us, there's a huge amount of talent in this group and I have no doubt they'll lead this group back to the top."

The former Punjab Kings star batter, who began his BBL career with Perth Scorchers and spent several seasons at the club, also revealed that he has some fond memories from his time there, including the successive title triumphs.

"I've got some fond memories of playing in Perth and really enjoyed my time there. The back-to-back titles are up there for me as the most enjoyable moments I've experienced on a cricket field," Marsh added.

Marsh, who last played for the national team in 2019, has scored 2265 runs, including 6 hundreds in 68 Test innings, and 2773 runs, including 7 hundreds in 72 ODI innings. In T20Is, he has scored 255 runs in 15 innings.
