Shikhar Dhawan on Saturday, August 24, announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket through a video he posted on his social media handles. Dhawan last played for India in December 2022.
The 38-year-old, who last represented India in December 2022 in an ODI match, thanked his family, coaches, his teammates, BCCI and DDCA for their support throughout his career. The southpaw played

"I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. I am at peace that I played a lot for my country. I am also thankful to my fans for giving me so much of love. I just say to myself that don't be sad that you will not be able to play for your country now, but be happy that u played for your country. That's the biggest thing for me - 'I Played'," Shikhar Dhawan said in an emotional video he posted on his X and Instagram handle.
The Delhi-born cricketer made his international debut in October 2010, and played 34 Tests, 167 ODI and 68 T20Is for India. He scored 2315 runs in Test cricket at an average of 40.61, 6793 runs in ODIs at an average of 44.11, and 1759 runs in T20I cricket an average of 27.92. Shikhar Dhawan hit seven hundreds in Tests and 17 in ODI format.
Shikhar Dhawan was part of the India team which won the ICC Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni in 2013. He also featured in the 2015 World Cup semi-final against Australia. The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan became one of the most successful for India. They scored 5148 runs together in 115 innings at an average of 45.55. Only three more opening pairs in ODI cricket history have scored more runs together.
Overall, he played a total of 122 first-class matches, 302 List A games, and 334 T20 matches in his career. Dhawan did not disclose anything about his future plan.
