Shikhar Dhawan drops himself, picks Shubman Gill for the Indian team - Watch

Shikhar Dhawan has melted the hearts of the netizens with a brilliant response in a recent interview.

India batter Shikhar Dhawan has been a phenomenal performer for the team over the years. But in recent times, the southpaw has been deemed surplus to requirements and has found himself out of the national side.

Shikhar Dhawan Shubman Gill

Dhawan last played for India in the Bangladesh ODIs in December 2022, and has found himself out of the team since then. The 37-year-old has proven himself t be one of the prolific scorers for India but Shubman Gill has replaced the batter in the team.

With Shubman Gill's brilliant form in the white ball cricket and menacing arithmetic of age, Dhawan finds himself in a tricky situation in terms of an India return, especially with the World Cup on the horizon.

And amid the conundrum, Dhawan was asked about his chances in the World Cup team from the perspective of a selector or the Indian captain. Dhawan replied sublimely with his calm demeanour and won the hearts of the netizens. He admired the reporter for the question and came up with a brilliant answer.

"I feel the way Shubman is playing in all the formats, in the Tests and T20s, hence he is playing more matches in the international circuit compared to me. Hence, if I was a selector, I would have given Shubman an opportunity instead of Shikhar," the southpaw said.

Dhawan was asked again if he really would pick Shubman over himself, and the ever-smiling batter was firm with his reply, "Haan Ji, main Shikhar ke upar Shubman ko chunta (Yes Sir, I would have picked Shubman over Shikhar)".

Fans were in awe of the reply and hailed the Indian batter for his humility and modesty. It is not easy to pick someone over yourself and Dhawan stunned the reporter with his reply, as well as the people of our nation.

"Ek hi to dil hai, kitne baar jeetoge," one fan wrote with the clip of the interview.

Dhawan has scored a lot of runs for India over the years. The opener has 6793 runs for India in ODIs, with a decent average of 44, consisting of 17 centuries and 39 half-centuries. His stats in the ICC and continental tournaments is even glorious, with the batter amassing 1772 runs with a monumental average of 63.

Although the veteran may well be snubbed come to the World Cup later this year, he can clearly make a case for himself with a decent IPL this year. Dhawan will lead Punjab Kings in the IPL 2023 and a decent outing there can bolster his chances of making a return to the India fold.
