Colombo, Aug 17: India's opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan was today ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against Sri Lanka due to a hand injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said.
Left-handed Dhawan, who sustained an injury while attempting to take a catch in the 1st Test in Galle last week, will now need 4 to 6 weeks to recover from a hairline fracture to his right hand.
"The BCCI medical team has confirmed that opening batsman Mr. Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the remaining part of India's tour of Sri Lanka - 2015. Mr. Dhawan had injured his right hand during the first Test at Galle. He underwent further tests that confirmed a hairline fracture in his hand. He would require four to six weeks to recover from the injury," the Indian cricket board said in a media statement on Monday (August 17).
Dhawan had said he batted in pain to score a century in the Test. "I sustained the injury because of the catch I dropped (Kaushal Silva off Varun Aaron's bowling) in the first innings. It affected a little bit on my batting and I wasn't playing too many shots. If I hadn't had any pain, my score could have been more. I had also moved out of slips during fielding, because of pain," Dhawan had said after scoring 134 in the first innings.
India are trailing 0-1 in the 3-Test series. They lost the 1st Test by 63 runs as they failed to chase 176. The 2nd Test starts in Colombo on August 20.
On Sunday (August 16), all-rounder Stuart Binny was called up as the 16th member of the team. However, no reason was given for his inclusion.
