Shikhar Dhawan's Journey: Marriage, Family, and Divorce

By Rishab VM

Shikhar Dhawan, one of India's most prominent opening batsmen, announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an illustrious 14-year career to a close. Dhawan, who last played for India in December 2022 in an ODI against Bangladesh, leaves the game having amassed 10,867 runs from 269 appearances, including 24 centuries.

Over the past decade, he has been a linchpin of Indian batting, consistently delivering match-winning performances. While his cricketing achievements have been celebrated, Dhawan’s personal life, particularly his marriage to Aesha Mukherjee, has also garnered significant attention.

This article explores Dhawan's marriage, family life, and the eventual divorce that marked the end of their relationship.

Meeting and Marriage with Aesha Mukherjee

Shikhar Dhawan's love story began in the most modern way—on social media. Dhawan met Aesha Mukherjee, an amateur kickboxer, on Facebook, a connection made possible by mutual friend and fellow cricketer, Harbhajan Singh. Aesha, born on 27 August 1975 in West Bengal, hails from an Anglo-Indian background with a Bengali father and a British mother. Shortly after her birth, Aesha's family relocated to Australia, where she completed her education and pursued training in kickboxing.

Despite the 10-year age difference between them, Dhawan and Aesha’s relationship blossomed quickly. They got engaged in 2009, a time when Dhawan was still carving out his place in the Indian cricket team. Their wedding, however, took place only after Dhawan had established himself as a cricketer. The couple tied the knot on 30 October 2012, in a ceremony that marked the beginning of a new chapter in Dhawan's life.

Family Life and Children

Shikhar Dhawan and Aesha Mukherjee's marriage was not just a union between two individuals but also brought together their children from Aesha's previous marriage. Aesha was previously married and had two daughters, Aliyah and Rhea, with her first husband. Dhawan embraced his role as a stepfather, adopting Aesha’s daughters and building a close-knit family.

In December 2014, Dhawan and Aesha welcomed their son, Zoravar Dhawan, further strengthening their bond. Dhawan’s social media often featured glimpses of his life with Aesha, Zoravar, and his stepdaughters, portraying a picture of happiness and domestic bliss.

The Breakdown of the Marriage

However, as years passed, cracks began to appear in Dhawan and Aesha's marriage. By September 2021, the couple had decided to end their relationship, leading to a separation. The reasons for their separation were not widely discussed in public, but the couple’s differences eventually led to their divorce.

On 5 October 2023, a local court in Delhi granted Shikhar Dhawan a divorce from Aesha Mukherjee on the grounds of 'mental cruelty.' The court’s decision highlighted the emotional and psychological strain that had developed between the couple over time. Despite the divorce, Dhawan was granted visitation rights to see his son Zoravar, and he was also allowed to maintain regular communication with him via video calls.

Moving Forward

Shikhar Dhawan's journey, both on and off the field, has been one of resilience and perseverance. While his cricketing achievements are celebrated by millions, his personal life has seen its fair share of challenges. The end of his marriage with Aesha Mukherjee marks a significant chapter in his life, one that has shaped him in many ways.

Despite the ups and downs, Dhawan continues to inspire with his positive outlook, both as a cricketer and as a father. His story is a reminder that life’s journey is a blend of triumphs and trials, and how one navigates these challenges defines their legacy.
