GT vs RR, IPL 2023: Shimron Hetmyer's fireworks amaze Twitter

By Mykhel Staff

Shimron Hetmyer played his best knock of IPL 2023 on Sunday when the batter slammed 56 not out of just 26 balls to help Rajasthan Royals beat Gujarat Titans for the first time in Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.

Hetmyer's innings helped RR chased down 179 with four balls and three wickets to spare from a precarious situation as the side lost their captain Sanju Samson's wicket in the 15th over after he scored 60. Needing 64 runs off the last five overs, Hetmyer did the heavy lifting while Dhruv Jurel (18) and Ravichandran Ashwin (10) provided help with their cameos.

We take a look at the Tweets that praised the Windies for his entertaining finish:

Ashwin got out at a crucial point too with the side needing seven runs in the penultimate over as the Guyanese finisher maintained his cool and shot Noor Ahmad for a boundary in the final over to seal the win. Hetmyer shot five sixes and two boundaries during his entertaining innings.

There were other performers in the game too with Samson scoring 60 while Shubman Gill and David Miller scored 45 and 46 respectively for Gujarat Titans. Mohammad Shami picked three wickets and two of them came at death in Ashwin and Jurel while Rashid Khan got the big scalps of Devdutt Padikkal and Riyan Parag.

However, Shimron Hetmyer stood out and won the Player of the Match award as well for taking the Royals past the finish line against the defending champions. Hetmyer has always carried the reputation of a pinch-hitter but his consistency was always a concern.

All that has changed this season as the 26-year-old southpaw has consistently fired runs and at a good strike rate. Hetmyer has scored 183 runs in the last five innings at a strike rate of 184.85. Batting down the order, he has made himself further reliable by remaining not out on four out of the five innings.
