Shoaib, Asif and Gul are still doubtfull for home series

By Staff

Lahore, Mar 26 (UNI) The pace trio of Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul are still doubtful for the upcoming home series against Bangladesh with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) checking the availability of these players.

''The selection committee will hold a meeting in Lahore on Saturday and it will first ask the PCB about the availability of players like Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul before finalising the team,'' Chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed told The Dawn.

Controversial pace spearhead Shoaib is facing a disciplinary inquiry for his comments against the PCB, which were found to be in violation of the board's code of conduct.

Asif, meanwhile, is recovering from an elbow surgery in Sydney and Gul is recuperating from the back injury which kept him out of last year's Test series against India.

Both Asif and Gul will require fitness certificates from trainer David Dwyer to be eligible for selection when the squad is announced on Saturday.

Bangladesh will arrive in Pakistan on April 6 and will play five one-day matches and a Twenty20 international.

The upcoming series has been arranged by the PCB after Australia postponed their tour to the country citing security concerns.

Australia have not played in Pakistan since 1998. The series between the two countries scheduled for Pakistan in 2002 was played in Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates after Australia refused to tour because of safety concerns.
