Nagpur, December 9: Shreyas Gopal made his fourth first-class century as Karnataka broke away from Mumbai on the third day of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinals on Saturday (December 9).
Resuming from their overnight 395 for six, Karnataka ended up at 570 as Shreyas made an unbeaten 150 (274, 11x4).
Shreyas, overnight 80, progressed serenely to his hundred and kept on building Karnataka's total. But what hurt Mumbai significantly was the last wicket partnership between Shreyas and S Arvind.
Came together at the crease 478 for nine, Shreyas and Arvind (51, 41b, 9x4, 1x6) milked 92 runs for the final wicket as Karnataka swelled their first innings lead to 397, one of the biggest leads ever against Mumbai in first-class cricket.
In their second innings, Mumbai reached 120 for three but they still need 278 runs to avoid an innings defeat.
Prithvi Shaw, who has been prolific in Ranji Trophy this season, failed for the second time in this match. In this innings, Shaw fell to Arvind for 14.
Jay Bista and Akhil Herwadkar too did not build on their respective starts as Mumbai fell behind the eight balls.
Surya Kumar Yadav made an unbeaten 55 off 115 balls with seven fours and a six but it seems that Mumbai have managed only to prolong the fight for just another day.
