Shreyas Iyer Equals Virat Kohli, Closes In on MS Dhoni's India T20I Toss Record
Shreyas Iyer has joined an elite list of Indian captains after winning his sixth consecutive toss in T20 Internationals, moving level with Virat Kohli and edging closer to MS Dhoni's long-standing national record.
The milestone came during the fourth T20I against England at the County Ground in Bristol on Thursday (July 9, 2026), where Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first in a must-win encounter for India. With the victory at the toss, the Indian skipper extended his remarkable streak to six successive toss wins in T20Is.

Although winning the toss is purely a matter of chance, long streaks are rare in international cricket. Iyer's run has now placed him alongside former captain Virat Kohli, who also won six consecutive T20I tosses between August and December 2019.
Only legendary captain MS Dhoni has enjoyed a longer streak for India. Dhoni won seven successive T20I tosses between May 2010 and February 2012, a record that has stood for more than a decade. If fortune favours Iyer again at the toss in India's next T20I, he will equal Dhoni's benchmark of seven consecutive toss victories.
Interestingly, Dhoni also features elsewhere on the list, having won five consecutive tosses during the inaugural phase of his T20I captaincy in September 2007. Former captain Rohit Sharma also recorded a streak of five straight toss wins between February 2020 and February 2022.
Most Consecutive Tosses Won by an India Captain in T20Is
7 - MS Dhoni (May 2010 - Feb 2012)
6 - Virat Kohli (Aug 2019 - Dec 2019)
6 - Shreyas Iyer (June 2026 - July 2026)
5 - Rohit Sharma (Feb 2020 - Feb 2022)
5 - MS Dhoni (September 2007)
For Iyer, however, the bigger objective remains guiding India back into the series against England. Nevertheless, his six-match streak has already earned him a place among India's luckiest captains at the toss, and another win in the next T20I would see him equal Dhoni's national record. Despite winning six tosses, India have failed to win a single match so far.
