Shreyas Iyer hits 37-ball fifty Duleep Trophy after mayhem from Mukesh Kumar and Navdeep Saini

In his last outing of the Duleep Trophy 2024, India D captain Shreyas Iyer played a counter-attacking knock which saw him hit a 37-ball fifty against India B on Day of the ongoing first-class match in Anantapur.

India B pacers Mukesh Kumar and Navdeep Saini were on fire as they reduced India D to 18/3 on Saturday, September 21. Devdutt Padikkal (3), and Nishant Sandhu (5) were dismissed by Saini, Mukesh picked the wicket of Srikar Bharat. Padikkal and Bharat scored a fifty each in the first innings.

Shreyas Iyer walked into bat at five after the dismissal of Sandhu, and smashed seven fours and a six en route to his 50 off 40. The Mumbai batter was dismissed for a duck in the first innings.

His 75-run partnership off partnership with Ricky Bhui took his team's second innings lead past 150. Notably, India B were bundled out for 282 in response to India D's first innings total of 349.

Sanju Samson scored a hundred in the first innings for India D. He was batting alongside Bhui in the second innings when this article was published.

Shreyas Iyer's India D are already out of the title race after losing their first two Duleep Trophy 2024 matches. Iyer has blown hot and cold in the Duleep Trophy 2024. He scored 104 runs in the first two matches at an average of 26 and a strike rate of 85.25. He scored 9 and 54 in the first game, and followed it with 0 and 41 in the second.

Shreyas Iyer out of Indian Test team

The Mumbai batter was dropped midway through the Test series against England this year, and did not get a place in the India squad for the first Test against Bangladesh either.

With Sarfaraz Khan in the squad, and KL Rahul playing as a pure batter, Shreyas Iyer's Test comeback looks unlikely at the moment. He was last seen playing for India in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
