Punjab Kings batter Shashank Singh has opened up on a tense moment between him and PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer during IPL 2025.
In the Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians, Punjab secured a terrific victory. Shreyas played a brilliant unbeaten knock as they beat Paltans to qualify for the final after 11 years. But in the match, Shashank got run out at a crucial stage following an inexplicable piece of lazy running, which angered Iyer.

After the match, the PBKS captain was seen reprimanding Shashank with some strong words. After the win, Iyer was visibly upset with Shashank Singh for exhibiting "lazy running," which resulted in Shashank's run-out at a critical juncture. Footage captured Iyer confronting and chastising him immediately following the conclusion of the game.
And now, the player has gone a notch further, as Shashank expressed that he deserved a stronger reprimand. He remarked that Iyer "should've slapped me" instead of just a verbal rebuke, acknowledging the severity of his mistake. He admitted the matter stung so much that even his father didn't speak to him until the final match.
"I deserve it, Iyer should have slapped me, my father didn't speak to me till the finals. I was casual, I was walking on the beach not even in the garden. It was a crucial time, Shreyas was clear that I didn't expect this from you but later he took me out for dinner," Shashank said to Indian Express.
Shashank was the tragic hero for Punjab as he couldn't take his team over the line in the IPL 2025 final. He scored an amazing unbeaten 61 off just 30 deliveries, but it was not enough as the Kings lost by 6 runs. And Shashank says it was the inability to get more runs in the penultimate over which cost them the match.
"I had done my calculation of the last two overs, Bhuvi likes to bowl yorkers so I had planned to get atleast 16-17 runs from him. My calculation was that in the last over our target should be 24 runs in 6 balls. I got only 13 from Bhuvi's over though, so the final over runs needed was 30," he added.
Shashank Singh, who played his first IPL in 2024 season, now has more than 350 runs in his first two seasons. The Punjab Kings batter is knocking on the doors of an India call-up and may get an opportunity in the coming T20 assignments.
His IPL captain, Shreyas Iyer, is meanwhile playing in the T20 Mumbai League. Shreyas is leading Mumbai Falcons who have advanced to the semifinals of the competition.
