Shreyas Iyer's sensational form with the bat across formats has reignited discussions around his role in Indian cricket, with the latest buzz pointing toward a potential leadership position in the white-ball setup.
Iyer, who was India's top scorer in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 held in Pakistan and Dubai, seamlessly carried his form into the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. Representing Punjab Kings, the Mumbai-born batter racked up 604 runs from 17 matches, playing a pivotal role in steering the franchise to their first IPL final appearance in over a decade.

While Punjab Kings couldn't end their title drought-falling short in the final-Iyer's impact as a leader didn't go unnoticed. His growing stature as a captain, after previously leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL crown in 2024, has drawn attention from the national selectors. A report in The Indian Express published on June 7 stated that Iyer has now entered the fray for India's white-ball captaincy.
"Right now he just plays ODIs, but after this IPL we can't keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus, he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race," one of Indian cricket's key decision-makers told The Indian Express.
Despite his impressive leadership credentials and consistent run-making, Iyer has yet to lead India in any international format. He last featured in a Test match in February 2024 and his most recent T20I came against Australia in December 2023. The omission of his name from India's squad for the upcoming Test series in England-especially in the wake of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's retirements-left many fans stunned.
Currently turning out for the SoBo Mumbai Falcons in T20 Mumbai 2025, Iyer is expected to return to international duty in August when India tour Bangladesh for a limited-overs series comprising three ODIs and three T20Is.
With form, leadership experience, and public backing on his side, Iyer's elevation to a bigger role in Indian cricket could just be around the corner.
