Shubh Aarambh: The Inspiring Journey of a Father and Son from Fazilka to Leeds

Lakhwinder Singh Gill, a farmer from Chakh Khere Wala village near the Indo-Pakistan border, relocated to Mohali to nurture his son Shubman's cricketing talent.

Shubman, who was gifted a cricket bat by his grandfather Sardar Didar Singh, showed promise from a young age. Lakhwinder's dedication to his son's cricket career was unwavering, with no alternative plans in mind.

Shubman Gill's journey is a testament to the principles of discipline, dedication, and determination. His father's relentless support played a crucial role in his development. On June 20, when Shubman steps onto Headingley alongside Ben Stokes wearing the India blazer, it will mark the culmination of a 16-year journey filled with sacrifices and perseverance.

Commitment and Sacrifices

The Gill family made significant sacrifices for Shubman's cricket career. They avoided social gatherings and weddings to ensure Shubman's focus remained on cricket. Lakhwinder once mentioned that they hadn't attended any wedding festivities for years to keep their son's concentration intact.

Financial resources were available from the start. Grandfather Didar Singh provided a makeshift pitch at their Fazilka home. Lakhwinder took the risk of moving the family to Chandigarh, leaving behind their comfortable village life to support Shubman's aspirations.

Right Place, Right Time

Shubman's story exemplifies being in the right place at the right time and seizing opportunities. In 2011, former India seamer Karsan Ghavri noticed Shubman's talent during an Under-14 game near PCA Stadium in Mohali. Ghavri invited Shubman to join a pace bowlers camp after seeing his impressive technique.

At just 12 years old, Shubman faced India U-19 seamers like Sandeep Sharma with ease. Ghavri's recommendation fast-tracked him into the Punjab U-14 side. This serendipitous encounter marked the beginning of Shubman's rise in Indian cricket.

Support from Rahul Dravid

During India A's 2018 tour of England, Rahul Dravid advocated for Shubman's inclusion in the team. Despite Anmolpreet Singh's strong domestic performance, Dravid requested selectors to choose Shubman for List A games. Dravid recognised Shubman's exceptional technique and temperament.

Dravid believed that too much time in domestic cricket could hinder development. He wanted Shubman to progress quickly through the ranks. This decision paid off as Shubman delivered significant performances for India A, including a double century against West Indies A.

Progress and Challenges

Shubman's Test batting is still evolving, but he has excelled in ODIs with his unique style reminiscent of Virat Kohli. His ability to play shots like snap pulls and cover-drives has made him stand out. England will test his skills further in upcoming matches.

Leadership qualities have also emerged during the current IPL season. If Shubman becomes captain, Gautam Gambhir could be instrumental in guiding him during his early days as a leader. The journey won't be easy, but Shubman is committed to giving his all.

The future holds promise for Indian cricket with hopes pinned on Shubman's success as he continues to strive for excellence on the international stage.
