Shubman Gill and KL Rahul to play against England Lions? Latest Update Revealed

By MyKhel Staff

Shubman Gill has been named in the India A squad for the second unofficial Test against the England Lions, scheduled from June 6 to 9 in Northampton. This game is being viewed as a key fixture ahead of India's five-match Test series against England, starting June 20 at Headingley.

However, Gill's participation in the Northampton game is now uncertain. Following Gujarat Titans' IPL 2025 exit on May 30, Gill reportedly approached the BCCI to request a short break. Having been constantly on the road since February - from the ODI series against England to the Champions Trophy and then the IPL, the young batter is understandably looking to take a few days off to recharge physically and mentally. His aim, it appears, is to be fully fit and available for the intra-squad match in Beckenham from June 13 to 16.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul is reportedly set to fly to England soon. With Delhi Capitals bowing out of IPL 2025 on May 24, Rahul has had more recovery time. His past involvement with India A, including matches against Australia A ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, makes his potential inclusion a logical step in preparation for the England series.

That said, clarity on whether either Gill or Rahul will actually play in the second match remains elusive. Yudhvir Singh, a member of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association and the appointed team manager for the England tour, has stated:

"I have not received any information yet. Once the Indian Premier League (IPL) is done, we will figure out if there are any changes to the squad," the team India manager reportedly said to Sportstar.

At present, their availability hinges on final assessments by the BCCI and the team management, taking into account fitness, readiness, and overall planning for the long English summer ahead.
