Shubman Gill Becomes First-Ever India Test Captain To Achieve THIS Record, Even Virat Kohli Couldn't Do!

Shubman Gill continued his stellar form as captain of the Indian Test team by achieving a landmark feat during the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

On Thursday (July 3), the 25-year-old batter Gujarat Titans man became the first Indian Test captain to score a double century not only on English soil but also across all SENA countries-South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia.

This is only Gill's second Test leading the national side, and he has already made his presence felt in a big way. Batting at No. 4, Gill reached the milestone in style by guiding a single off the first delivery of the 122nd over, bowled by England pacer Josh Tongue. His unbeaten double hundred has further solidified his reputation as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket today.

Gill's knock has also placed him at the top of the list for the highest scores by Indian captains in Test matches played in England. His 200* surpassed Mohammad Azharuddin's 179 at Manchester in 1990 and Virat Kohli's 149 at Edgbaston in 2018. Interestingly, Gill himself features twice on this elite list, having also scored 147 in Leeds earlier in the same series.

The young skipper's feat comes with added historical context. Virat Kohli had previously set the benchmark for Indian Test captains overseas by scoring 200 against the West Indies at North Sound in 2016. While Kohli was the first Indian captain to register a double century away from home, Gill has now become the first to do so specifically in England and among the challenging SENA nations.

Gill's composed and commanding innings has not only given India a strong foundation in the second Test but also further cements his growing stature as a leader in the longest format. As India aims to reclaim the series lead, his double ton could prove pivotal in shaping the outcome of this fiercely contested five-match series.
