Amit Mishra played down the idea of appointing Shubman Gill as the permanent captain of the Indian cricket team in future. He minced no words in stating that Shubman Gill was clueless as captain.
Elaborating his point, the veteran leg-spinner said he observed Shubman Gill's captaincy for Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2024 and found that he looked out of place and confused.

"I've seen him (Shubman Gill) in the IPL, and he doesn't know how to do captaincy. He has no idea about captaincy. Why they made him captain is a question. Just because he's in the Indian team doesn't mean he should be made captain," Amit Mishra told Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube podcast 'Unplugged'.
Shubman Gill was named the captain of a young Indian squad which went to Zimbabwe for five T20I matches. India lost the first match but bounced back to win the next four games.
Amit Mishra reckoned that the young opener was named India captain for the Zimbabwe tour as the selectors wanted to give him some leadership experience and keep him as one of the captaincy options in future.
"Just because he is a part of the Indian team, he shouldn't be made the captain. Gill has done well in the IPL over the last few seasons, he did fine in the Indian team as well. The Indian team made him the captain as they wanted to give him leadership experience, which wasn't visible when he led Gujarat Titans in IPL," Mishra added.
Further, Amit Mishra called Ruturaj Gaikwad a better batter than Shubman Gill. He said Gaikwad was a complete and reliable batter capable of playing in all the three formats. He said the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain should have been in India's reserves list for T20 World Cup 2024.
"Gaikwad is better than Gill as he has scored runs in tough situations. He should have been in the reserves list for the T20 World Cup 2024 as I think he is a complete player capable of playing in all the three formats. He has the technique, and does not take a lot of risk. He is that calmness."
