Shubman Gill Falls Short of Gavaskar's Record but Sets New Benchmarks in India-England Test History

Shubman Gill came agonizingly close to rewriting Indian cricket history during the final Test of the five-match series against England at The Oval. The young batter entered the match just 53 runs short of surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's iconic record of 774 runs - the highest aggregate by an Indian in a single Test series.

However, Gill managed only 21 runs in the first innings and 11 in the second, falling 20 runs short of the legendary milestone.

Despite missing out on overtaking Gavaskar's 1971 tally against the West Indies, Gill ended the series with a remarkable total of 754 runs from 10 innings - a standout achievement in its own right. At just 25, Gill showcased consistency and composure throughout the series, cementing his reputation as one of India's most promising batting stars.

Though Gavaskar's record remains intact, Gill carved his name into the record books by setting a new benchmark in the India-England Test rivalry. With his final tally, he went past former England skipper Graham Gooch's 752-run haul from the 1990 home series against India. Gooch had achieved that total in just three Tests, but Gill's performance across five matches now stands as the highest by any player in a bilateral Test series between India and England.

Gill also surpassed another record previously held by Gavaskar - the most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series. During the 1978-79 home series against the West Indies, Gavaskar scored 732 runs across six Tests. Gill overtook that mark during his first innings at The Oval.

While Don Bradman's all-time record of 974 runs in a single Test series - set in the 1930 Ashes - still stands as the ultimate benchmark, Gill's performance places him in elite company. Although the record for most runs by an Indian remains just out of reach, his dominance in the series will be remembered as a significant chapter in modern Indian cricket.
