India's defeat in the second Test at Lord's has sparked a debate around captain Shubman Gill's on-field demeanor, with former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif urging the young skipper to focus on composure rather than confrontation.
Kaif suggested that Gill's heated exchange with England opener Zak Crawley may have played a part in shifting the momentum England's way, eventually resulting in a narrow 22-run loss for the visitors.

The incident occurred late on Day 3 when Gill expressed frustration over Crawley repeatedly backing away from the crease while facing Jasprit Bumrah. The English batter also called for medical attention after being struck by a delivery, further eating into the remaining minutes of play. Gill didn't hide his displeasure, reacting with sarcastic claps, finger-pointing, and even a mocking gesture toward the dressing room, calling for an 'Impact Player'.
Commenting on the episode, Kaif wrote on X, "Shubman Gill's fight with Zak Crawley charged England. After Edgbaston, there were questions about their batting, bowling and captaincy. But that incident fired up Stokes and he bowled an inspiring spell. It is wise to stick to the attitude that works for you. Gill will learn this the hard way."
While it's hard to prove if the flare-up directly influenced England's resurgence, Ben Stokes certainly rose to the occasion. The England captain, who had only recently returned to bowling duties, sent down over 40 overs and claimed five crucial wickets, leading from the front.
Reflecting on the confrontation, Stokes said, "When you're watching your two opening batters go out there for an over, and you're seeing 11 guys all come at [them], that's going to bring out another side."
Pacer Jofra Archer echoed those sentiments, adding, "It was a collective effort... sometimes we're too nice. We go to other places and some teams are not as nice to us as we are to them... we will keep it in the bank for the future!"
Tensions flared again on Day 4 when England responded in kind-Brydon Carse shouted at Akash Deep for delaying the game, while Stokes clapped toward KL Rahul. With the series still alive, this rivalry may only intensify in the matches ahead.
