Shubman Gill brought his superb form from the international home season into the IPL 2023 too as the right-handed batter played a 36-ball 63 innings in Gujarat Titans' win over Chennai Super Kings in the season's opening match at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday.
Shubman Gill shot three sixes and six fours during the course of his innings as the batter provided a strong start to the defending champions while chasing 179. He added 51 runs in the powerplay with Wriddhiman Saha, who was the first wicket to fall after scoring 25 runs.
Gill stayed on the wicket till the 15th over and took the score to 138 by that point but was at fault for throwing away his wicket as he played a rash shot while facing IPL's first-ever impact player Tushar Deshpande. In the end, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan ensured Titans won the game in a crunch encounter.
Before the start of the season, the 23-year-old Punjab batter scored 530 runs, including three centuries, for India in all formats in what has been a marvellous season for Gill so far with the 50-over World Cup approaching. He also memorably scored a double century against New Zealand before the Border Gavaskar series.
He has maintained a strong string of performances in IPL too as Gill scored 483 runs in the last season in the Titans' winning campaign, including four half-centuries.
