Shubman Gill needs to come up with consistent performances to be a leader in Test cricket

By Indranil Basu

Shubman Gill's trajectory as a future leader in Indian cricket, particularly the question surrounding his vice-captaincy status in the Test format, is really becoming a talking point right now.

The fact that Gill wasn't named vice-captain for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh is indeed surprising, given how vocally the selectors have supported him in white-ball cricket.

Shubman Gill Ready For Leadership?

This decision opens up a larger conversation about Gill's readiness to shoulder leadership responsibilities across formats and the selectors' approach to grooming him for the future.

There could be multiple reasons for this move. One possibility is that the selectors are testing Gill's consistency and adaptability, especially in challenging conditions where the ball moves or spins - a known area of concern for him.

Despite his undeniable talent, Gill has faced criticism for struggling in such situations, earning him the label of a "flat-track bully." If the selectors believe he needs more time to prove his mettle in the Test arena, this could explain why they've held off on naming him vice-captain for now.

Regarding the role of vice-captain in the Test team, it's crucial to have a dependable second-in-command, especially with long tours like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the horizon.

Injuries are a common occurrence in such series, as seen in 2021 when India had to turn to fringe players and even net bowlers like T Natarajan to fill in for injured regulars. In that series, Ajinkya Rahane's steady leadership in Virat Kohli's absence was instrumental in India's victory, underlining the importance of having a strong vice-captain.

Potential Competitors For Gill

At present, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant seem to be the front-runners for the Test vice-captaincy in case Rohit Sharma is unavailable. Both have demonstrated leadership potential - Rahul having captained in the past, and Pant proving his mettle as a wicketkeeper-batter with a sharp cricketing mind. Pant, in particular, has already been touted as a future Test captain, owing to his aggressive approach and match-winning abilities in the longest format.

For Gill, this could be a pivotal moment. While he is clearly being groomed for leadership in white-ball cricket, the selectors might want to see more impactful performances in Tests before handing him the reins. Kohli, at a similar age, had already started making significant contributions across formats, particularly in high-pressure situations.

Gill's challenge will be to replicate such match-defining knocks, especially in overseas conditions where the ball moves and spins. Though Gill is highly regarded and enjoys immense support, the fact that he's not the Test vice-captain may indicate that the selectors are keeping their options open.

If he can find consistency in the next few Test matches and perform under challenging conditions, he could certainly reclaim that position and solidify his leadership credentials across formats.
