Following Rohit Sharma's announcement to step away from Test cricket, all eyes are now on who will take over the leadership duties in the traditional format.
If recent developments are anything to go by, it appears that Shubman Gill is set to be named India's next Test captain, beating out other contenders such as Jasprit Bumrah.

While Bumrah, India's current Test vice-captain, has experience leading the team and has previously voiced his interest in the role, concerns over his fitness and workload could be a deciding factor. The Indian selectors, meanwhile, seem keen on handing the reins to the next generation, and Gill appears to be the top choice.
As per a report by Dainik Jagran, conversations have already taken place between Gill and the team management, and a decision has been reached regarding his captaincy. The official word is expected to come around May 23 or 24, when India's squad for the upcoming Test series in England is finalised.
This highly anticipated series marks India's first assignment in the new ICC World Test Championship cycle and will begin on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. The remaining four Tests will be held in Birmingham, Lord's, Manchester, and The Oval.
Gill, who is yet to captain India in the longer format, has been involved in leadership roles in white-ball cricket. He led the national side during their five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe last year and currently serves as vice-captain in limited-overs formats. His leadership during IPL 2025 has been particularly noteworthy-guiding the Gujarat Titans to the top of the table, a run that has reportedly left a strong impression on the BCCI officials.
Earlier this week, Rohit Sharma confirmed his Test retirement through social media, bringing an end to a distinguished red-ball career. "Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format," Rohit posted.
With the selection panel, headed by Ajit Agarkar, gearing up for a crucial squad announcement, Indian cricket fans might soon see a fresh chapter unfold under the leadership of Shubman Gill.
