Shubman Gill Slams Second 150-Plus ODI Score, Joins Rohit Sharma-Led 'Daddy Hundreds' Club

Lucknow, June 17: India captain Shubman Gill's breathtaking 154 off just 110 deliveries against Afghanistan under energy sapping heat in Lucknow was not merely another ODI hundred. It was an innings that placed the India captain alongside some of the greatest names in the country's cricket history.

The stylish right-hander tore apart the Afghanistan attack at the Ekana Stadium, smashing boundaries at will and maintaining complete control throughout his stay at the crease. By the time he departed for 154, Gill had registered his second score of 150 or more in One-Day Internationals.

That achievement has elevated him into one of the most exclusive batting clubs in Indian cricket.

Before Wednesday's knock, Gill's only 150-plus ODI score was his memorable double century against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023, when he hammered 208. With his latest masterclass in Lucknow, the Punjab batter became just the fifth Indian cricketer to record multiple 150-plus scores in ODI cricket.

The list is headed by Rohit Sharma, who remains the undisputed king of big ODI hundreds. The former India captain owns eight scores of 150 or more, including his world-record 264 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in 2014.

Only three other Indian batting legends had previously achieved the feat more than once - Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Virender Sehwag.

What makes Gill's achievement particularly remarkable is the speed at which he has arrived among such illustrious company.

At just 26 years of age, the Indian captain has already accumulated nine ODI centuries and crossed 3,000 runs quicker than any Indian batter in history. His latest innings further reinforced his growing reputation as one of the premier 50-over batters in world cricket.

Gill's 154 was a complete ODI innings. He weathered the early phase, accelerated through the middle overs and then dominated Afghanistan's bowlers during the death overs. His partnership with Ishan Kishan, who also scored a century, laid the foundation for one of India's most commanding ODI batting displays in recent years.

The innings also highlighted a trend that has defined Gill's ODI career. When he gets set, he rarely settles for modest scores. Three of his nine ODI centuries have already crossed the 140-run mark, while his appetite for converting starts into match-defining knocks continues to separate him from many of his contemporaries.

India has witnessed several great ODI batters over the decades, from Tendulkar and Sehwag to Rohit and Kohli. By joining a club occupied exclusively by those giants, Gill has added another chapter to what is rapidly becoming a remarkable one-day career.

For now, Rohit Sharma's record of eight 150-plus ODI scores remains comfortably ahead of the field. But with age on his side and records falling at an astonishing pace, Gill has already positioned himself among the elite names in Indian cricket's rich ODI history.
