Shubman Gill To Miss T20I Series Along With ODIs As Neck Injury Needs Extra Care: Report

India's Test captain Shubman Gill, who had travelled to Guwahati with faint hopes of regaining fitness in time for the second Test, has now been ruled out for a longer stretch than initially anticipated.

What was first believed to be a minor neck spasm has turned into a more complex issue, forcing Gill not only out of the Test against South Africa but also out of the upcoming ODI series beginning November 30 reportedly. With his unavailability confirmed, Rishabh Pant has stepped in as stand-in captain for the ongoing Test.

According to a PTI update, Gill's condition is more serious than a routine spasm and demands a significant recovery window. He is currently in Mumbai undergoing detailed medical evaluation, including an MRI, to pinpoint the exact nature of the problem. The team management, unwilling to take any risk with a key all-format player, is prioritising long-term fitness over a rushed comeback.

A source privy to the developments explained, "All tests are being done to ascertain whether it is a muscular injury or a nerve-related niggle that requires more rest. As of now, selectors will be hoping he gets fit for the South Africa T20Is." Gill has met Dr Abhay Nene, a renowned spine specialist in Mumbai, and the findings of the assessment have been sent to chief selector Ajit Agarkar for further evaluation.

Providing an additional update on the treatment process, a BCCI source said, "Gill has been given an injection to alleviate his symptoms and will need a period of rest before starting rehab, training and skill work. There is every chance he could also be doubtful for the T20I series." The report suggests that his participation in the T20Is against South Africa, starting December 9, appears increasingly unlikely.

With Gill sidelined, the selectors face a leadership dilemma for the ODI series. Pant, who is captaining the Test side, is in contention but has featured in just one ODI in the past year. KL Rahul, India's preferred wicketkeeper in the 50-over format, seems a more practical choice for a short series, particularly as vice-captain Shreyas Iyer remains out with a spleen injury.

In Gill's absence, Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to partner Rohit Sharma at the top in Ranchi, while Abhishek Sharma - a consistent performer for India A - could be drafted in as the reserve opener.
