SL vs AUS: Dimuth Karunaratne has announced his retirement from Test cricket, setting the stage for a memorable farewell at Galle International Stadium.
The second Test against Australia, starting on February 6, 2025, will mark not only the end of an era but also Karunaratne's 100th Test match for his country.

Dimuth Karunaratne, who burst onto the international scene in the same venue against New Zealand in 2012, decided to step away from the longest format following the conclusion of the first Test. His rationale for this decision is both noble and forward-thinking, aiming to pave the way for emerging talents in Sri Lanka's cricketing landscape.
"I informed Sri Lanka Cricket that this would be my last Test. It's time for the younger players to step up, and there's no better place than Galle for me to end my journey," Karunaratne reflected, according to ESPNcricinfo.
His career, marked by resilience, especially as an opener, has been nothing short of remarkable. Over 99 Tests, Karunaratne has amassed 7197 runs at an average of 39.40, with 16 centuries and 39 fifties. His highest score, a monumental 244 against Bangladesh in Pallekele in 2021, stands as a testament to his prowess with the bat. Beyond his personal achievements, he has led the Sri Lankan team in 30 Tests, scoring 2643 runs at an impressive average of 49.86, including eight centuries as captain.
However, Karunaratne's career isn't without its share of 'what ifs'. He lamented not having the chance to lead or play in a World Test Championship final, an experience he deeply coveted. "We were close on two occasions, but it never happened," he shared, encapsulating a minor regret in an otherwise storied career.
