SL vs IND 2024: Can Hitman Rohit Sharma break shackles to end ODI century drought?

Indian captain Rohit Sharma is gearing up for the upcoming ODI series challenge against Sri Lanka. The first ODI is slated to be held on August 2, Friday at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo (2:30 PM IST).

The last time Rohit Sharma graced the cricketing fraternity with an ODI century was in November 2023, during the World Cup match against Afghanistan. Hitman pitched in with a masterclass performance as he scored a 84-ball 131-run blitzkrieg, in what was one of the fastest centuries recorded in ODI World Cup history.

In the process, he went past Ricky Ponting's tally of 30 centuries. Rohit's 31st ODI century placed him firmly among the greats with an all-Indian top three in the list of most centuries in ODI cricket. Virat Kohli (50) and Sachin Tendulkar (49) are placed first and second on the list.

Will the wait end in Colombo?

Ever since registering the 31st ODI century, he hasn't quite been able to launch another huge knock, leaving fans curiously awaiting his next three-figure score. Now, as Rohit Sharma returns to lead Team India in a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, the question hovering on everyone's mind is whether this series will finally see him end his century drought.

Of course, having retired from T20Is after successfully guiding India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title in Barbados, Rohit Sharma has now turned his full attention to ODIs and Tests. The upcoming series in Sri Lanka presents an excellent chance for him to regain his century-scoring form.

Needless to say, it won't be an easy thing for sure as all three ODIs in this series are set to be played in Colombo, a venue where the Mumbai-born cricketer has had mixed success. In the 13 matches he has played at this venue, he has amassed 305 runs at an average of 27.72, including one century and two fifties.

While these stats may not be in Rohit's favour, his experience and recent form suggests he is more than capable of turning the tide. If he manages to hit a century in Colombo, it would not only end the long wait for his 32nd ODI century but also see him go past MS Dhoni’s ODI run tally of 10,773 runs. As things stand, Rohit is currently at 10,709 runs and is just 72 runs away from achieving a milestone.
