Team India's young cricketing brain Shubman Gill has been appointed as the vice-captain for the upcoming T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting July 27 and India's cricket landscape is abuzz with the recent development.

This decision comes on the heels of Shubman Gill replacing Hardik Pandya in the leadership hierarchy, with the youngster set to serve as deputy to new T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and ODI captain Rohit Sharma.

Shubman Gill drew plaudits for his recent successful captaincy stint during India's tour of Zimbabwe. Under his tutelage, the visitors kick-started the T20I series campaign with a defeat but made a stunning turnaround, winning the next four games on the trot and thereby, won the series by 4-1.

Appointing Shubman Gill as the vice-captain is seen as the right decision because of the fresh energy and perspectives he brings to the table. At 24, Gill is still on the learning curve and will be curious to pick up valuable lessons from senior cricketers.

The youngster is set to join hands with T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and ODI captain Rohit Sharma for the upcoming tour. It is indeed a golden opportunity for him to learn from two of the best in the business, which will only help him learn invaluable insights into leadership.

Shubman Gill has never captained in ODI cricket so far but the recent development means that the future of Indian cricket is in safe hands, with the Fazilka-born poised to play a crucial role in shaping the team's destiny in the years to come. It is also a forward-thinking approach by India's national selection committee as they aim to groom a young leader and it seems time has now come for Gill to learn and grow as a leader.

Gill has led the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2024 season. However, the Ahmedabad-based franchise failed to make it to the playoffs as they finished eighth on the points table with five wins and seven defeats. Sri Lanka's tour of India consists of three T20Is and three ODIs.

All the T20Is will be played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. On the contrary, the first of the three-match ODI series will begin on August 2. All three games will be played at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
