SL vs IND 2024: Three reasons why all eyes will be on Shubman Gill in Sri Lanka T20Is

SL vs IND 2024: India's tour of Sri Lanka comprises three T20Is followed by three ODIs. The tour begins with the T20I series, with the opening fixture slated to be played on July 27, Saturday at Pallekele. Meanwhile, there will surely be plenty of relentless pressure on Shubman Gill.

The youngster hasn't had the best of starts to his T20I career. Besides that, he hasn't got a good record against Sri Lanka. As he gears up for the upcoming T20I series, he finds himself under immense pressure to perform.

Shubman Gill

It remains to be seen how he goes about his business in the series. In this article, let's now take a look at three reasons why there will be huge pressure on Shubman Gill's shoulders in Sri Lanka T20Is.

1. Vice captaincy responsibilities

Gill has been appointed as the T20I vice-captain and will be serving as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy. This role naturally brings additional pressure in the first place because as vice-captain, he will be expected to lead by example on and off the field. His leadership qualities will be under scrutiny and any slip-up from his part could be magnified. He will be looking forward to joining hands with Suryakumar Yadav to contribute to team strategy and decision-making.

2. Poor Batting Record against Sri Lanka in T20Is

The youngster's previous experiences against Sri Lanka in T20Is have not been favorable. In three games, he has managed to score only 58 runs at an average of 19.33, without a single fifty to his name. This lackluster performance adds to the pressure, as he will be keenly aware that both fans and critics will be watching to see if he can elevate his gameplay to the next level. He will need to find ways to take the Sri Lankan bowling attack to the cleaners effectively.

3. Struggles in T20I format

Despite his undeniable talent, the 24-year-old had the best of starts in his T20I career. With 505 runs in 19 games at an average of 29.7, his statistics are incredibly low, considering a player of his caliber. As a result, he will need to adapt his game to the shorter format's demands. It won't be easy for him to find the right balance between aggression and consistency but given his talent, he is expected to come out on top. He will be looking forward to playing the game with intent and just a few standout performances in this series would help him build a great deal of confidence in T20Is.
