SL vs IND 2024: Virat Kohli eyes multiple milestones as Team India gears up for Sri Lanka ODIs

SL vs IND 2024: Former Indian captain Virat Kohli is gearing up for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The senior pro who is currently the third leading run-scorer in the 50-over format is aiming to achieve multiple milestones to his already illustrious career.

His potential to adapt to different pitches and situations makes him one of the most crucial batters in world cricket. Since he has mastered the art of assessing conditions throughout his career, he is expected to use all his experience to better effect in R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The Colombo pitch can vary from being slow to providing some turn. Since Kohli has a wealth of experience, he would read the conditions early and adjust his game accordingly. With multiple milestones within his grasp, Kohli will look to bring his A-game to Colombo, where he will not only aim to lead India to victory but also continue to etch his name in the record books. Let's delve deep into the possible milestones that Kohli could achieve in the upcoming ODI series.

1. 14,000 ODI runs in sight: Virat Kohli mustered 13,848 runs in the 50-over format. He is just 152 runs shy of the 14,000-run milestone. Given his form factor and experience, it’s highly likely he may reach this landmark in the series. Sachin Tendulkar leads the ODI batting charts with 18,426 runs followed by Kumar Sangakkara with 14,234 runs.

2. ODI fifties record: With 72 half-centuries, Virat Kohli is currently tied with Sourav Ganguly. If he manages to score one fifty, then he would surpass Ganguly's fifty tally in the format. Meanwhile, Kohli is just one fifty behind MS Dhoni's tally of 73 fifties. A couple more half-centuries will see him surpass both Indian legends, further cementing his place in cricket history.

3. Could surpass MS Dhoni's run-tally in Sri Lanka: The 35-year-old scored 1,028 runs in Sri Lanka at an average of 48.95 including five centuries and two fifties. Meanwhile, the senior pro needs 213 more runs to surpass MS Dhoni’s 1,240-run tally in Sri Lanka. Given current form and hunger for runs, India's run-machine is well on his way to achieving this milestone during the three-match series.
