SL vs IRE: Sri Lanka become second team after Pakistan to match India's rare Test feat

Sri Lanka posted their seventh Test total of 700 or more on day four against Ireland, declaring on 704/3 after taking a 212-run lead in the second Test match in Galle.

Senior batter Angerlo Matthews brought up his 15th hundred on Thursday and that meant that each of Sri Lanka's top four had made a hundred in the innings, only the third such instance in Test history.

Opener Nishan Madushka slammed a double hundred (205), and his opening partner and captain Dimuth Karunaratne scored 155 runs off just 133 balls. Sri Lanka's number three Kusal Mendis (245 off 291) also slammed a double hundred.

The feat was first achieved in 2007 by India against Bangladesh in Mirpur when Dinesh Karthik (129), Wasim Jaffer (138), Rahul Dravid (129) and Sachin Tendulkar (122*) smashed a hundred each. Karthik had opened along with Jaffer as India posted 610/3 and won the match by an innings and 239 runs.

SL vs IRE: Pakistan repeated the feat in 2019 against Sri Lanka in Karachi to register a come-from-behind win. Pakistan ended up conceding a first-innings lead of 80 runs after getting bundled out for 191.

Later, Pakistan top four of Shan Masood (135), Abid Ali (174), Azhar Ali (118) and Babar Azam (100*) smashed a hundred each in the second innings. Pakistan ended up winning the match by 263 runs.

Talking about the match between Sri Lanka and Ireland, Sri Lanka declared after taking a 212-run lead in the first innings on Day 4. Ireland, who posted 492 in their first outing in the match, were two down for 54 when this article was published.

Hosts Sri Lanka are leading the 2-Test series 1-0. They won the fist Test by an innings and 280 runs.
