SMAT 2024: In a thrilling Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 pre-quarterfinal clash in Bengaluru, Mohammed Shami stunned everyone – not with his bowling but with his bat.
Coming in at No. 10, Shami smashed a quickfire unbeaten 17-ball 32, showcasing his prowess as a pinch-hitter and helping Bengal post a defendable total of 159/9 against Chandigarh.

With Bengal struggling at 114/8, Shami launched a late onslaught, slamming three boundaries and two towering sixes, with 18 runs coming off Sandeep Sharma's final over.
Shami's blitzkrieg was pivotal in Bengal recovering from a precarious position. He ended as Bengal's second-highest scorer behind Karan Lal, whose 25-ball 33 at the top laid a modest foundation. Contributions from Pradipta Pramanik (30 off 24) and Writtick Chatterjee (28 off 12) added crucial runs.
However, it was Shami's fearless approach in the death overs that ensured Bengal crossed the 150-run mark. Chandigarh's Jagjit Singh impressed with figures of 4/28, but Shami's counter-attack neutralised his efforts.
This knock adds another dimension to Shami's already celebrated cricketing career, especially as he is on a comeback trail after a year-long injury layoff. Despite limited opportunities in T20 cricket, Shami proved his ability to adapt, delivering a blistering performance under pressure.
The pacer’s all-round display comes at a time when his reintegration into India's Test squad is under discussion, particularly after India's struggles against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
India captain Rohit Sharma himself kept the possibility of Shami’s reintegration into the national team squad alive. “The door is very much open,” the skipper said in a post-match conference. “However, we want to ensure he is fully fit before considering him for the Test side.”
Shami, currently awaiting final clearance from the NCA, is expected to feature in the last two Tests in Australia, provided he passes fitness assessments.
Bengal’s victory in this match, contingent on Shami's heroics, advances them to the quarterfinals, where they face Baroda. With Shami back in rhythm, his performance will not only boost Bengal’s chances but also set the stage for a potential Test return. His recent SMAT performances, including this career-best T20 knock, underline his readiness for top-tier cricket once again.
