Something New for RCB Fans? Bengaluru Exploring Unique IPL Ticket Experiment

Cricket fans heading to Royal Challengers Bengaluru matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium may soon get an additional perk: free metro travel on match days.

Authorities in Bengaluru are currently discussing a proposal that would allow Indian Premier League ticket holders to travel free on the city's metro network when attending matches.

The plan is being discussed between the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

How the proposed system would work

If approved, fans holding valid tickets for IPL matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium would be able to travel free on the Namma Metro network.

Under the proposed system, the IPL match ticket itself would function as a metro pass. Officials are considering embedding a QR code on the match ticket, which fans could scan at metro stations to access the network.

The facility would allow fans to travel from any metro station in Bengaluru to Cubbon Park Metro Station, the closest stop to the stadium.

Facility likely limited to match days

According to officials familiar with the discussions, the free travel benefit would apply only on IPL match days.

Fans attending matches would simply need to show their IPL ticket or scan the QR code to enter the metro system and reach the stadium area without buying a separate metro ticket.

The move is being explored to make commuting easier for thousands of supporters who attend matches at the stadium and to reduce heavy traffic congestion around central Bengaluru on match days.

Proposal still under discussion

At present, the proposal remains in the discussion stage, with authorities reviewing its feasibility and operational requirements before making a final decision.

Officials from BMRCL have confirmed that talks are ongoing and that a decision will be taken after evaluating logistical aspects of implementing the system.

IPL returns to Chinnaswamy on March 28

The first IPL match at the venue this season will see Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28.

The initiative could significantly ease match-day travel if approved, especially with large crowds expected at the stadium throughout the IPL season.
