Sourav Ganguly Exclusive: Former Captain Discusses Champions Trophy 2025 Favorites and Jasprit Bumrah Injury Concerns

As the cricketing world anticipates the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly shared his insights on the tournament's favorites and addressed concerns regarding Jasprit Bumrah's potential absence.

When asked about the teams likely to reach the semi-finals, Ganguly remarked, "Any team can go, but India, Australia, England, South Africa are strong. Australia, India, Pakistan, South Africa are good. They are in the subcontinent. Pakistan will be playing at their home, so they will also be strong and England. These are the 5 teams and any of them can win."

The conversation then shifted to India's pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, who is currently grappling with a back injury. Ganguly acknowledged the potential impact of Bumrah's absence, stating, "Obviously. If an Indian player like Bumrah doesn't play in any tournament, it will be a loss for India. Let's hope he gets fit quickly and plays."

Bumrah's significance to the Indian team cannot be overstated. In the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, he emerged as the leading wicket-taker, claiming 32 wickets in five matches at an average of 13.06, which earned him the Player of the Series award.

His exceptional performance throughout 2024 culminated in him being honored as the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year, having secured 71 wickets in 13 matches. However, during the final Test of the series in Sydney, Bumrah experienced back spasms, which prevented him from bowling for the majority of the match.

Subsequent medical evaluations revealed a back injury, casting doubt on his participation in the forthcoming Champions Trophy. He is slated to consult with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rowan Schouten in New Zealand for further assessment.

Despite these concerns, there is cautious optimism regarding his recovery. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, while refraining from delving into specific medical details, expressed hope for Bumrah's timely return, stating, "It's better to come from the medical department than me trying to explain what exactly is wrong with him, but that's the time frame that we've been told, and hopefully it's okay after that, yeah, but we are very hopeful."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely monitoring Bumrah's condition. Given his pivotal role in the team's bowling lineup, his potential absence would be a significant setback for India's Champions Trophy campaign.
