Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has congratulated Rohit Sharma on the birth of his second child, a baby boy, but has stressed the importance of Rohit's presence in Australia ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Speaking to RevSportz, Ganguly highlighted the significance of Rohit's leadership in the highly anticipated series opener in Perth, set to begin on November 22. Ganguly acknowledged Rohit's family joy.

However, he also urged the Indian captain to fly to Australia immediately, stating, "I hope Rohit Sharma goes very soon because the team needs leadership. The first Test is still a week away. If I were in his position, he should be playing the first Test. It's a big series, and Rohit will not go to Australia again after this."
Ganguly, who played a pivotal role in convincing Rohit to take up the Test captaincy, reiterated the importance of this series in shaping the skipper's legacy. He recalled how Rohit initially hesitated to accept the Test leadership due to workload concerns but eventually embraced the role.
"I told him, 'Don't finish your career without being the Test captain of India.' I am not surprised at what he has achieved," Ganguly said. Rohit, currently in India following the birth of his child, has yet to confirm his travel plans to Australia.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly made arrangements for his quick departure. In his absence, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah has been leading practice sessions in Perth. Adding to the discussion, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar insisted that Rohit's presence is crucial for Team India to start the series strongly.
Whereas, former Australian captain Aaron Finch expressed understanding if Rohit prioritized family commitments. The debate underscores the stakes involved in this five-match Test series, especially as it could be Rohit's final outing in Australia as a player.
India's preparations are in full swing, with match simulations underway in Perth. However, questions loom over the team's mental strength and strategic leadership if Rohit misses the first Test. As Ganguly succinctly put it, "This team needs a leader."
