The first season of Betway SA20, South Africa's flagship T20 league, made a significant economic impact on the country, as detailed in an Economic Impact Assessment (EIA) commissioned by the League.
The report underscores the immense positive influence the 33-match tournament had on South Africa's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), household income, employment, and direct expenditure.

Betway SA20's inaugural season proved to be a remarkable success. It was a summer of extraordinary spectator numbers across the six host venues, high-quality cricket, and a rekindled enthusiasm for domestic cricket. The season also saw significant investment by international cricket franchise brands.
According to the study, the league injected R1.4 billion into South Africa's economy, creating 8223 annualized job opportunities. It contributed R4.1bn to the nation's GDP and added R958m to household income.
The teams' investment in their franchises across the six host cities had a substantial stimulating effect on the local communities. The Indian Premier League-owned teams' impact extended beyond financial commitment, with players, staff, venues, and vendors benefitting from their international experience and expertise in building the world's most successful cricket league. As Season 2 approaches, the League aims to continue its positive influence on as many South Africans as possible.
Betway SA20 League Commissioner, Graeme Smith, noted that one of the League's key strategic objectives is to have a positive social impact on South African cricket and the broader economic environment in the country. "Our primary goal in seeking suitable franchises to partner with SA20 was to ensure significant economic investment into the League and South African cricket. However, an event of this scale has a broader impact," Smith said.
He added that the results from the EIA are a testament to the legacy the League aims to create. While delivering a world-class cricket product remains their primary focus, the ripple effects, including economic investment, job creation, and positioning South Africa as a tourist destination, have been exceptional. Smith expressed hope that the League would continue to grow stronger in the coming years.
The inaugural season was enthusiastically received by South African fans who flocked to support their favourite teams, making cricket the summer's highlight. An impressive 74% of tickets were sold for all matches, which included six sell-out matches and the final. This positive response to the first season is an encouraging sign for the second season, set to kick off on 10 January 2024.
In conclusion, the Betway SA20's first season has not only revitalized domestic cricket and attracted considerable international interest but also had a tangible, positive economic impact. The success of the inaugural season sets an encouraging precedent for league growth and continued economic benefit in the future. It will be exciting to see how the league builds on this success in its second season and beyond.
