South Africa will hope to better their semi-final record when they face record champions in a rematch from 1999 semis in the last four match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday (November 16).
Temba Bavuma's side won seven and lost two in their run in to their fifth ODI World Cup semi-final. They became the second team to book the last four berth in this edition with one game left in the league stage.

The Proteas opened their campaign with thumping wins over Sri Lanka and the record champions Australia, but suffered a shock loss to Netherlands before getting their semis hopes back on track with five more wins in six matches. So, what was their route to the last four in 2023?
| Match No. | Opponent | Venue | Result |
| 1 | Sri Lanka | Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi | SA won by 102 runs |
| 2 | Australia | BRSABV Ekana Stadium, Lucknow | SA won by 134 runs |

South Africa, who made their Cricket World Cup debut in 1992, have reached the semifinal stage of the show-piece tournament 5 times in 9 attempts. They last reached the semi-final in 2015 before they achieved the feat again in 2023.
The Proteas, who have never won the World Cup so far, have only missed out on qualifying for the semi-final in four editions. While they made a group stage exit in 2003 and 2019, South Africa reached as far as the quarter-final in 1996 and 2011.
In the four previous ODI World Cup semi-finals, South Africa has a record of 0-3 with one match ending in a tie that also saw them being knocked out due to inferior Net Run Rate in the Super Six standings compared to their opponent.
With zero progressions past semi-finals, South Africa are the only team to make the last four stage and not reach the final in as many attempts. Here is a look at South Africa's ODI World Cup semi-final record:
| Edition | Opponent | Venue | Result |
| 1992 | England | SCG, Sydney | SA lost by 19 runs |
| 1999 | Australia | Edgbaston, Birmingham | Match Tied (SA knocked out due to lower NRR in Super 6 table) |
| 2007 | Australia | Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet | SA lost by 7 wickets |
| 2015 | New Zealand | SCG, Sydney | SA lost by 4 wickets (DLS Method) |
Having lost every semi-final so far, Bavuma's side will look to set that right and go all the way to play for a chance to lift first-ever ODI World Cup title, when they face the winner of India vs New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (November 19).
