Sports Bulletin of October 28: From Gary Kirsten leaving Pakistan to Man United sacking Erik ten Hag

It has been a busy, and revealing Monday (October 28) across the sports world. The biggest story comes from Pakistan, where Gary Kirsten has left the helm as the head coach.

1. Gary Kirsten resigns as Pakistan Head Coach

Gary Kirsten has left as the head coach for the Pakistan national team only six months after taking the role. The South African relinquished his role just days before his first ODI assignment. Kirsten was at odds with PCB regarding the vision and team selection, which became untenable over the past few weeks. He was Pakistan's ODI and T20I head coach since the T20 World Cup in June.

2. Jason Gillespie roped in as Pakistan white-ball Coach

PCB has announced Jason Gillespie as the new head coach in the limited-overs format. The former Australia pacer is the head coach of the Test team and will now coach the Pakistan side in the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Australia, which will start on November 3. Under Gillespie's tutelage, Pakistan won their first Test series at home in four years against England.

3. No KL Rahul as Lucknow Super Giants pick IPL 2025 Retentions

Lucknow Super Giants are set to keep five players ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Nicholas Pooran, Mayank Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi will be retained whereas Ayush Badoni and Mohsin Khan are certain to be kept as uncapped players. In total, LSG will spend a minimum of Rs 51 crore for retentions.

4. Mayank Yadav ruled out for Three Months with Injury

India's pace sensation Mayank Yadav is likely to be sidelined for the next three months with an injury. Yadav, who was slated to represent India after a fantastic debut against Bangladesh in T20Is, has suffered another injury blow. It is a recurring back injury which has troubled him again and the Delhi-born may play no part till the end of this calendar year.

5. Australia name squad devoid of Test players for Pakistan T20Is

Australia have named a fresh squad for the upcoming T20Is against Pakistan. None of the Test playing names are included in the shortest format and the captain is yet to be named as well. Tim David, Marcus Stoinis are in the team while Glenn Maxwell also returns in the squad. Apart from that, Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson are also picked for the series.

6. Harshit Rana shows all-round skills in Ranji Trophy

Days after being selected for the Australia Test series, Harshit Rana has showcased his all-round skill in the Ranji Trophy. The Delhi pacer picked up five wickets with the ball, and then scored a crucial 59 runs off just 78 deliveries with the bat against Assam. The 22-year-old's performance with the bat was pivotal as Delhi managed to get a first-innings lead against Assam.

7. Bukayo Saka scores 50th league goal against Liverpool

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka scored his 50th Premier League goal for Arsenal against Liverpool on Sunday (October 27). The Gunners winger thus became 11th Arsenal player to do so in the league. Despite Saka's strike, Arsenal were held 2-2 at home by Liverpool and remain 3rd in the table with 18 points after nine matches. Manchester City sit on top of the PL table with 23 points in nine matches.

8. Taijul Islam replaces Shanto as Bangladesh Test Captain, Shakib In for 1st Test vs South Africa

Taijul Islam is set to captain Bangladesh in the upcoming Test series against South Africa. He has taken over the duties from Najmul Hossain Shanto, who stepped down after the series defeat against India. The Tigers are set to play the first Test in Chattogram which starts tomorrow. Shakib Al Hasan has also been included in the squad for the first match against the Proteas.

9. Aryna Sabalenka takes lead over Iga Swiatek in WTA Rankings

Aryna Sabalenka has taken a healthy lead in the latest WTA rankings as she sits on top of the pile. Sabalenka has accumulated 9016 points, which is significantly greater than her immediate challenger Swiatek, as the Polish sits with 7970 points. USA star Coco Gauff is third in the rankings with 5230 points, followed by Jasmine Paolini (5144 pts) and Elena Rybakina (4971).

10. Manchester United sack head coach Erik ten Hag

Manchester United have decided to relieve the head coach Erik ten Hag of his duties. The Dutchman, who was at the club since 2022-23 season, was sacked after the latest defeat against West Ham United in the league. The Red Devils have lost four league matches out of nine, sitting 14th in the table. Ruud van Nistelrooy has been handed the interim head coach duty as the club looks for new head coach.
