In football, Manchester City extended their perfect Premier League start with a commanding win at Anfield. Tennis produced a landmark China Open title for Zheng Qinwen, while India's performances at the Asian Games continue to prompt debate over consistency and medal expectations.

Shikhar Mohan struck 143 off 196 balls to register the first century of the 92nd Ranji Trophy season, putting Jharkhand in a strong position against Kerala in Jamshedpur. His innings included 18 fours and two sixes, following scores of 85 and 52 in the Duleep Trophy final and 60 in the Irani Cup. Shikhar shared an 87-run opening stand with Sharandeep Singh, who made 33, before adding 163 for the second wicket with Utkarsh Singh. Utkarsh contributed 71 as Jharkhand reached 250/1, but Kerala fought back through off-spinners Jalaj Saxena and Vaisakh Chandran. Jharkhand ended the opening day at 289/5, with captain Virat Singh unbeaten on 12.

3. South Africa fight back against Australia to keep Durban Test alive

South Africa recovered from 155/6 to reach 284 all out on Day 3 of the first Test against Australia in Durban, reducing the visitors' first-innings lead to 106 runs. Marco Jansen, Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje helped the hosts recover with valuable lower-order contributions after Australia had threatened to enforce the follow-on. Pat Cummins took 3/54, while Steve Smith continued to impress in the slips, taking four catches during South Africa's innings and moving past Joe Root for the most Test catches by a non-wicketkeeper. Australia reached 33/0 in their second innings before bad light stopped play, extending their overall lead to 139. Nic Maddinson and Travis Head were unbeaten on 17 and 10 respectively at stumps, leaving the contest open ahead of the fourth day.

4. Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-0 to maintain perfect Premier League start

Manchester City defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield to record their sixth consecutive Premier League win and preserve their perfect start to the season. Liverpool's task became harder when Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute, and Erling Haaland opened the scoring three minutes later. Jeremy Doku doubled City's advantage with a long-range strike before Rayan Cherki completed the win in the 78th minute. The result came in City's first match since an independent commission found the club guilty of 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules, a verdict they have appealed. City moved to 18 points, three clear of Arsenal, while Liverpool suffered their first league defeat of the campaign and dropped to ninth.

5. Zheng Qinwen beats Mirra Andreeva to win historic China Open title

Zheng Qinwen defeated fourth seed Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 to become the first Chinese woman to win the China Open WTA 1000 title. Zheng saved three set points in the opening set before taking control, then secured a late break in the second to complete the victory in one hour and 43 minutes. The title was her first since winning in Tokyo in late 2024 and her first at WTA 1000 level. Zheng also became the lowest-ranked player to win the China Open since its relaunch in 2004, having fallen to No. 160 midway through the season. The result is expected to lift her back into the world's top 30, while Andreeva is projected to rise to No. 3 in the rankings despite the defeat.

6. Odisha thrash Kerala 9-0 at Senior Men's National Hockey Championship

Odisha continued their strong start to the Senior Men's National Hockey Championship 2026 with a 9-0 win over Kerala in Division B Pool A.
