Sportspersons protest government policy

Imphal, Jun 17 (UNI) Sepak Takraw and Taekwondo players representing Manipur have threatened to boycott the next National Games to be held in Jharkhand if the Manipur government did not frame a proper sports policy.

They also demanded to segregate sports from politics.

The threats came after the state Cabinet decided to award four sportspersons for winning medals and leaving other winners in dark, who also medals in the last National Games held in Guwahati.

The government before starting the Games had announced jobs who would secure two or more gold medals at the Games. But the Government was yet to fulfil the commitment.

''Winning two medals is not possible for players who take part in some events and especially in weight categories,'' they said on condition of anonimity. They charged the government with biassed attitude towards some diciplines and sportspersons.

There were some players who had been winning gold medals in the National Games since 1994 but were denied the government job, they said.
