SRH vs CSK IPL 2024: Three Reasons why Chennai Super Kings Lost against Sunrisers Hyderabad

Chennai Super Kings lost their second consecutive IPL 2024 match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday (April 5).

CSK scored 165 for 5 in their 20 overs which was chased down comfortably with 11 balls to spare by the home team. The Orange Army secured the victory by six wickets which has taken them to 5th in the IPL points table, whereas CSK are sitting 3rd only for superior Net Run Rate.

SRH vs CSK IPL 2024

It was another disappointing night for Ruturaj Gaikwad and his team, and there were three distinct reasons for their defeat at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

SRH vs CSK: Why Chennai Super Kings Lost against SRH?

A Batting which Failed to cut Loose

It was a sloth batting performance from the Chennai Super Kings, which failed to break the shackles. From start to the finish, apart from Shivam Dube, all the other players scored at a strike rate of lower than 140. Even the likes of Daryll Mitchell and Ravindra Jadeja, who have reputations as big hitters, failed to capitalise in the final overs. The SRH bowlers bowled quite cleverly with their cutters and slow balls but the Chennai batters just couldn't push their accelerator. It was vivid as after Dube's dismissal, CSK could only manage 46 runs in their last 40 balls.

A Bowling which never Threatened

After scoring 165 runs, CSK bowling failed to provide the early breakthroughs. Deepak Chahar was toothless while Mukesh Choudhary, who came in as an Impact Player, conceded 27 runs in his one over. Abhishek Sharma's mayhem in the powerplay diluted the pressure on SRH as they put on 78 runs in the first six overs. From there, it was a cakewalk for them. Although Moeen Ali picked up a couple of wickets, it was never in doubt for the home side.

CSK missed their two overseas pacers Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana. The former missed due to his USA visa process while the latter had a niggle.

A Fielding which dropped catches

CSK had a chance to get Travis Head out in the second ball, but Moeen Ali squandered the opportunity by dropping his catch. Had Head been sent back to the pavilion then, the dynamics of the match could have changed drastically. After the first over, Abhishek Sharma and Head completely annihilated their bowlers and the pivotal moment kind of dictated the entire match against the Chennai side.
