SRH vs GT: Why is Harshal Patel not playing against Gujarat Titans tonight? Pat Cummins justifies decision for exclusion

By MyKhel Staff

SRH vs GT: Sunrisers Hyderabad's clash against Gujarat Titans in Match 19 of IPL 2025 brought a surprise at the toss, as pace ace Harshal Patel was missing from the playing XI. The right-arm seamer has been SRH's most reliable bowling option so far this season, with four wickets in as many games.

His ability to execute under pressure and his knack for striking in the death overs has made him a key cog in SRH's bowling plans - especially crucial given the franchise's current struggles with the ball in hand.

Harshal patel SRH vs GT

At the toss, SRH captain Pat Cummins clarified the reason behind Patel's absence, stating, "Happy to bat first. We want to be aggressive. It's a ground we like batting at, we scored 280 at this venue not so long ago. We need to play our best. Need to focus on our strengths. Harshal Patel misses as he is ill, Jaydev Unadkat comes in."

While Cummins confirmed Patel's illness, he did not specify a timeline for the pacer's return to action. His unavailability is a major setback for Hyderabad, who are desperate to rediscover the form that carried them to the final last season. More concerning is the fact that Patel has served as a reliable death-overs partner to Mohammed Shami -- another key member of the attack who has picked up only three wickets so far.

The absence of Patel adds pressure on an already underperforming bowling unit. SRH have the worst economy rate (10.83) and bowling average (41.15) in the tournament. Their biggest downfall has been in the death overs, where they leak runs at a staggering 15.04 runs per over - the worst among all 10 teams in IPL 2025. In their previous outing against KKR, they allowed 78 runs in the final five overs, despite bowling on a surface that offered grip and turn.

Stepping in for Patel is veteran left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat, who will be playing his first game of the season. While Unadkat brings experience to the table, the pressure of filling in for the team's leading wicket-taker and fixing the death-bowling woes won't be easy.

Adding to SRH's problems is a misfiring top order. The trio of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan have managed a collective 284 runs in four games - far behind GT's top-order group that has posted 437 runs in three matches. Take away Head's explosive hundred, and the numbers reflect a significant dip in consistency.

Back at home after three straight defeats - two of which came on the road - SRH will hope for a turnaround. But up against a Gujarat Titans side high on confidence and with batting firepower in abundance, they will sorely miss the services of Harshal Patel tonight. His illness comes at a time when the franchise can least afford to lose any more control at the death - an area already under scrutiny after a difficult start to the season.
