SRH vs PBKS, IPL 2025: What was the Turning Point that Took the Game Away from Punjab Kings?

By MyKhel Staff

SRH vs PBKS: In a match where over 490 runs were scored and records tumbled, it was a moment of missed opportunity in the powerplay that truly shifted the tide in Sunrisers Hyderabad's favour.

The defining point of the clash came early -- and quietly -- when Abhishek Verma dropped Abhishek Sharma during the fielding restrictions. What seemed like a simple lapse in judgment turned into a match-altering mistake, one that Punjab Kings were never able to recover from.

SRH vs PBKS turning points ipl 2025

Abhishek Sharma, who was yet to make his mark this season, came into the game with modest scores and zero sixes to his name. But on this batting paradise in Hyderabad, one chance was all he needed. When Verma spilled a routine chance - a misjudged attempt near the inner circle when Sharma was on 28 - the repercussions echoed through the rest of the evening.

That dropped catch allowed Sharma to reset, and he made PBKS pay heavily. What followed was an exhibition of power-hitting rarely seen at this scale. Sharma not only registered his maiden IPL century but also notched the highest individual score by an Indian in the tournament's history - 141 off just 55 balls. It was a stunning innings filled with clean strikes, calculated aggression, and an iron grip over the chase.

At the other end, Travis Head, who had struggled for consistency so far, found his rhythm too, joining Sharma in a 171-run opening stand - the biggest partnership of the 2025 IPL season so far. Punjab's early plans were dismantled in just over 12 overs.

While PBKS had earlier posted a formidable 245 for 6 - thanks to Shreyas Iyer's blazing 82 and Marcus Stoinis' four sixes in the final over - the dropped chance meant those runs looked less intimidating. Even Harshal Patel's commendable 4 for 42 couldn't cover the cracks. The psychological blow of that early miss lingered, compounded by further mishaps like Lockie Ferguson's injury and another dropped catch by Yuzvendra Chahal.

Punjab were still marginal favourites halfway through the game. But Verma's miss altered the mood. It gave Sharma the license to tee off, and from there, Hyderabad's innings became a run-fest. He went on to hit a 40-ball century - one of the fastest by an Indian - and struck 13 sixes in total. When he finally fell for 141 in the 17th over, the result was a foregone conclusion. Klaasen and Ishan Kishan merely formalised the victory.

In T20 cricket, turning points are often subtle - a mistimed shot, a lucky edge, or a fielding error. But some moments scream in hindsight. Abhishek Verma's dropped catch was exactly that. Had he held on, PBKS might have been celebrating another successful defence. Instead, it became the moment that unravelled their grip on the game - and sealed an unforgettable win for SRH.
