Sanath Jayasuriya, a legendary figure in Sri Lankan cricket, has been appointed as the interim head coach of the national cricket team. This decision comes ahead of the crucial white-ball home series against India, slated to start on July 27.
The Sri Lankan board expressing confidence in Jayasuriya's ability to lead the team until a permanent coach is appointed in the coming months. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced Jayasuriya's appointment following the resignation of the previous head coach, Chris Silverwood.

Silverwood stepped down after Sri Lanka's disappointing performance in the recent T20 World Cup, where the team failed to advance beyond the league stage. The board emphasized that Jayasuriya, with his extensive experience and deep understanding of the game, is well-equipped to steer the team during this transitional period.
Jayasuriya, who will continue in this role until the completion of Sri Lanka's Test tour of England in August-September 2024, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the position. Known for his aggressive batting style and strategic acumen, Jayasuriya has previously served as a chief selector and recently acted as a consultant for the team during the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean.
In a statement, SLC CEO Ashley De Silva said, "Sanath with his wealth of international cricketing experience is well-positioned to guide the national team until we find a permanent solution." This endorsement highlights the board's faith in Jayasuriya's ability to inspire and guide the team during this pivotal series against India and the subsequent tour of England.
Jayasuriya's illustrious cricketing career is a testament to his skill and dedication. He played 110 Tests, scoring 6,973 runs at an average of 40.07, including 14 centuries and 31 fifties.
In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he featured in 445 matches, amassing 13,430 runs with an average of 32.36, including 28 hundreds and 68 half-centuries. A key player in Sri Lanka's 1996 ODI World Cup-winning team, Jayasuriya's on-field exploits have left an indelible mark on the sport.
Beyond his cricketing achievements, Jayasuriya also served as a Member of Parliament from 2010 to 2015, showcasing his versatility and leadership abilities in various spheres. His appointment as interim coach is seen as a strategic move to leverage his vast experience and cricketing insights to rebuild and strengthen the Sri Lankan team.
