Colombo, Aug 24: On an emotional Monday when he bid adieu to international cricket, Kumar Sangakkara was offered the post of the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom by Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena.
Today (August 24) was Sangakkara's last day in international cricket. However, he could not bow out on a high as India defeated Sri Lanka by 278 runs on the fifth and final day of the second Test at P Sara Oval. (Teary-eyed Sangakkara says goodbye)
After the match, it was an emotional afternoon on the ground for Sangakkara as players, fans and several other dignitaries gathered to honour him. (Full text of Sangakkara's speech)
In attendance were country's President Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, India and Sri Lanka teams' players who played in Sangakkara's final Test.
As the special ceremony to felicitate the 37-year-old Sangakkara began, there were appreciations that came the left-hander's way right from his school, college and coaches.
And when it was the turn of the President to speak on Sangakkara's achievements. Sirisena hailed the Sri Lankan batsman's achievements and immediately offered him the position of the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
However, later, in a teary-eyed speech, Sangakkara did not reply to this new offer in his second innings of life.
