Steve Smith to retire from Test cricket? Australia star's manager gives big update

By MyKhel Staff

Steve Smith has hinted of his Test retirement in January this year after the third and final Test of the series against South Africa in Sydney. In the match, Steve Smith went past Don Bradman's tally with his 30th Test hundred.

The 33-year-old had expressed uncertainty over his next Test match on Australia soil. The former world number one batter featured in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 against India before playing the WTC final which Australia won. Later, he also featured in the Ashes 2023.

Australia are now gearing to play a 3-Test series against Pakistan starting December 14 in Perth. Smith is set to play another Test series on home soil and has been named in the squad and his manager has confirmed that the right-hander has no plan to say goodbye to the red-ball format.

"I can debunk that (retirement) at this point in time. He is still talking about things he wants to achieve," said Smith's manager as quoted by Sydney Morning Herald.

The comments in January had triggered a media storm, and reports have suggested that retirement of Smith could come sooner than expected.

“I don’t know. We’ll see. I’m enjoying it at the moment. I really can’t say how long I’ll play for. I’m not sure. Take it one tour at a time. Just enjoy it and enjoy training and trying to get better as well. Whilst I’m doing that I’m happy playing. But I don’t know how long it’ll last," he had said.

Steve Smith is the 15th highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket. He has scored 9320 runs in 102 Test matches at an average of 58.61. He is second on the list after Joe Root among active cricketers. His tally of 32 Test hundreds is also the highest among active cricketers.

Smith's 37-year-old teammate David Warner is set to retire from Test cricket after the third Test against Pakistan in Sydney.
