‘Stop the IPL Auction’: Former ₹3 Crore Rajasthan Royals Player Sparks IPL Debate

Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has sparked fresh debate around the IPL auction system, calling for the introduction of a draft-based model and questioning whether the traditional auction format still fits modern cricket.

Uthappa, a two-time IPL champion, believes the league has evolved to a stage where changes are necessary to maintain respect for players while improving team-building structures. His remarks have reopened conversations about whether the IPL auction format should continue or make way for a system used in other global sports leagues.

IPL Auction

Robin Uthappa's highest IPL auction bid was ₹3 crore, secured by the Rajasthan Royals during the 2020 IPL auction, which was double his base price of ₹1.5 crore. Before that, he was a key figure for Kolkata Knight Riders, having been bought by them in previous auctions. He later joined CSK for ₹2 crore in 2022.

Robin Uthappa Suggests Replacing IPL Auction With Draft System

Sharing his views on the current structure, Uthappa said the auction system may have served its purpose in the early years of the IPL but no longer reflects the values of a mature global league.

"We should stop the auction system in cricket. I understand its importance when it first started, you wanted it to grab attention and become a big hit. But in today's date, you don't want to sell humans like commodities or have them go under the hammer.

If you look at American sports like the NFL and NBA, they have a draft system, which makes things more interesting. Yet we are still sticking to the auction because it's entertaining.

However, there is a limit to entertainment, and it feels like we're crossing that line. We need to bring that respect back into our society and communities.

There is a semblance of respect and we don't sell them as commodities on national television."

His comments reflect growing sentiment among some former players that the auction spectacle, while popular with fans, may need reform as the league continues to expand globally.

IPL Auction vs Draft System: What Is The Difference?

Uthappa's suggestion centres around adopting a draft-based system, similar to those used in major American sports leagues such as the NFL and NBA.

In a draft model, teams select players in a fixed order, usually based on rankings or previous season results, instead of bidding against each other. This structured approach is designed to maintain competitive balance and reduce financial disparities between franchises.

In contrast, the IPL auction relies on open bidding, where teams compete financially to secure players. While this format generates excitement and commercial interest, critics argue that it can create uneven squad building depending on spending power.

Debate Around IPL Auction Structure Gains Momentum

As the IPL continues to evolve into one of the world's most influential T20 leagues, discussions around structural changes are likely to grow stronger.

Uthappa's remarks have already generated mixed reactions among fans and analysts, with some supporting the idea of a more structured draft system while others believe the auction remains central to the IPL's identity.

Whether the league eventually considers such a major overhaul remains uncertain, but Uthappa's comments have added fresh momentum to the ongoing debate around the future of player recruitment in the IPL.
