Sumeet Dhekale Exclusive: ISPL star speaks on Tennis Ball Revolution, Mental Growth, Achieving his Aim

Tennis ball cricket is witnessing a revolution through the Indian Street Premier League (ISPL), and one of its brightest stars is Sumeet Dhekale.

A key player for Chennai Singams in the ISPL, Sumeet has been making waves with his consistent performances and unwavering dedication to the game.

Sumeet Dhekale

In an exclusive interview with MyKhel, he shared insights into his journey, his aspirations, and the growing impact of ISPL on young cricketers. Although Chennai Singams bowed out of ISPL 2025 from group stages, Dhekale was excellent throughout the season.

A Season of Determination and Growth

Reflecting on this season, Sumeet emphasized the importance of reaching the playoffs and making a mark in the tournament.

"We did well in ISPL. My performance is also getting better. We have only one match left to go to the playoffs. So, our first priority is to qualify," he said.

A Platform for the Next Generation

ISPL has not only provided established players with a grand stage but also paved the way for younger athletes to dream bigger.

"Earlier, the public did not see tennis ball cricket as a career. But if we push the new generation, this is a good platform to set their career. They should use it," Sumeet asserts, highlighting the league's role in changing perceptions about the sport.

Journey from Local Tournaments to the National Stage

Sumeet's journey into professional tennis ball cricket started from humble beginnings. The initial recognition fueled his passion, and he continued to hone his skills, eventually making a name for himself in national tournaments.

"When I was in my under-19s, we played a tennis tournament in front of our building. There were professional teams in front of me. I batted well, and that's when I got the opportunity to play in different states."

Facing the Challenges of ISPL's Unique Format

ISPL has introduced innovations in the game, such as the ISPL Ball, which demands a different playing style.

"Last season, I didn't take many chances because it was a light ball. This time, I used a machine-punch coating ball, which has more travel and swing. We are approaching boundaries differently now."

Playing with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mental Strength

Having played alongside top cricketers like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prithvi Shaw, Sumeet remains connected to his roots. Although Dhekale hasn't had an opportunity to meet with legend Sachin Tendulkar, he expects to meet the legendary player someday.

"I haven't talked with him. But he is the Cricketing God. If I get an opportunity, that will be wonderful," he said with admiration.

Sumeet believes that talent alone is not enough; mental toughness is crucial. And the veteran in the ISPL believes one will have to work hard to build their mental strength.

"Mental fitness is very important. If you don't have mental fitness, you can't perform well. You have to read and understand every situation. Everyone has talent, but they need to work on their mental strength."

The Road Ahead

As ISPL continues to grow, Sumeet remains focused not on achieving his dreams, rather on accomplishing his aims. Dhekale also has immense belief in the potential of ISPL as it's not just a competition but a movement that will shape the future of tennis ball cricket in India.

"I have no dreams, rather I have aims after playing ISPL. My dreams end early in the morning, but my aim doesn't end."

Sumeet Dhekale's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion. As Chennai Singams fight for a place in the finals, all eyes will be on this rising star, who is determined to turn his dreams into reality.
