Wishes have started to flow in for batting great Sunil Gavaskar as he turned 74-year-old on Monday. The Little Master who is the first cricketer to score over 10,000 runs in Test cricket, has maintained his big stature despite retiring from the game for over three decades.
The former opener has kept himself relevant with his astute readership of the game. Gavaskar is an active commentator and his latest stint was during India's World Test Championship (WTC) final match against Australia.

In a career spanning over 16 years, Gavaksar played 125 Test matches and scored 10122 runs at an average of 51.12. He scored 34 hundreds - the highest by any batter before Sachin Tendulkar broke the record in 2005 - and 45 fifties in Test cricket.
Tendulkar has gone on record to admit several times that Gavaskar was his batting hero and the one who inspired him to play for India in his early days.
The blunt and brazen comments of Gavaskar has seen him make headlines even 36 years after playing his last match. Only yesterday, Gavaskar slammed the foreign commentators for pointing just at Indian fans for ardently supporting their team.
“Nowhere has it been more apparent than at the current Ashes series. What bugs is the condescending way, overseas commentators, when they come to India, keep saying how quiet the Indian crowd at the ground is when an Indian batter gets out or when an Indian bowler is hit for a boundary,” Gavaskar has written for mid-day.
